Anti Bullying Week in 5.3

5.3 this week have been exploring what makes a good friend and what are the qualities of a bad friend. We all took a quiz so see what sort of friend we were - whether we share a lot or listen well to others. Here is 5.3 putting together a guide to being a good friend. They worked really well as a team and were kind to each other whilst they shared the glue and scissors on the table. Here is what happened this afternoon:

Ikon Art Gallery

5.3 today visited an art gallery in Brindley Place of Birmingham. We had lots of fun looking at the difference pieces of art and coming up with words to describe them which links in well with our English lessons of gathering words for our mystery story write up on Friday.

The art gallery is a free attraction and well worth a visit during the October half term. There is even an award winning cafe. Here are some of the pictures of what we discovered.

Welcome to all of the parents

Hello,

I am Mr Moore your child's class teacher. I have been teaching your child now for the last 6 weeks and I really excited about the potential in the class to come together, work as a team, help each other to improve and walk the learning journey together.

Over the initial term of the school year, we have revised our knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, explored perimeter and area of objects such as floor plans and treasure islands and next week we are measuring angles for the most exciting super hero on the planet, Angle Man.

In English, we have written autobiographies, studied famous scientists Galileo and Newton, written their biography and we are currently exploring how to write a good mystery story.

We have also made a computer game, explored morals and values in the world we live in, started our Volcanoes project and researched the phenomenon about gravity.

Over the next week, the children will receive details about their exciting half term project linked to Tim Peake and his outer space conquest in November. We also have the school disco on Thursday and 5.3 will be visiting the Ikon gallery in Birmingham on Wednesday afternoon.

After half term, we have golf and cricket club getting into full mood. The places are limited to year 5 and there are a couple of places left if your child is interested in signing up. We also have parents evening and then comes the most exciting event of them all, Christmas and Mr Claus! (As in Santa rather than Inspector gadget!)

Anyway, I hope to meet all of you at some point in the near future. Please say hi if you see me after school.

Best wishes,

Mr Moore

PS: Important announcement - James bond is out on Friday - wahoo!

Reading Project with Cockshut Hill

Some of our talented Year 5 children took part in a wonderful reading project organised by Miss Major at Cockshut Hill Secondary School.

The children attended a number of exciting sessions at Cockshut and worked with some of the lovely Year 8 pupils there.

All of the children did work around a book called 'Scream Street' written by the author Tommy Donbavand - they even got to take part in a really inspiring creative writing workshop with Mr Donbavand himself!!

The children recreated scenes from the book by using art and craft materials and filmed animations using state of the art ICT equipment.  They then edited what they had filmed to make animations that we could all watch.

The 'Scream Street' book series has been made in a TV series which will air on ITV in November this year - we are hoping to go back to Cockshut Hill to watch the first episode with the students and Miss Major.

A truly wonderful project - thank you to Miss Major, Mrs Joyce and all of the fantastic Year 8 students - you really did your school proud.

Well done to all of The Oval pupils who took part as well - you did an amazing job and represented our school brilliantly (as always)!

Mrs H Williams

The Year 5 children who took part were: Aleena, Tasneem, Megan, Max, Jack, Mustafa, Sadiyah, Zainab, Kai, Rhys, Hamim, Iman, Ayesha and Suhayb.

King Edward's Summer School Graduates

A group of 9 pupils from Y5 have just completed a 5 day Summer School programme at King Edward's in Edgbaston.  The pupils have all worked extremely hard and the staff and pupils had lots of lovely things to say about them.

I attended their graduation ceremony last night - where they even put on a performance of a Shakespeare play (which they had only learnt that afternoon!).

We really hope this will inspire you all to aim for high things!

The Y5 children who took part were:
Abdi, Aris, Tasneem, Iman, Aleena, Megan, Rhys, Hamim and Daniel.

Well done all of you - what an outstanding achievement - everyone at The Oval is extremely proud of you!

Cadbury World

Today, we visited Cadbury World in Bourneville.

In Topic, 5.3 have been learning about the Mayans who were the very first people to discover chocolate.

During the day, we learnt a lot about chocolate and how it is manufactured as well as about the Mayans.

Although the weather was terrible, we had a fantastic day and it was great fun.

If you have been to Cadbury World, leave a comment below about what you enjoyed the most about your trip!

We saw how they make chocolate and how they finish it off.
